26, 2002 The project to add Java functionality was instigated largely in response to feedback from early adopters of the BlueMod platform. "Our first users were quick to point out that while C is still the language of choice for the majority of embedded developers, Java is gaining a strong foothold for its flexibility and portability," said HCV Wireless CEO and founder Mr. Henry Valk. "By adding Java to the platform we are providing a valuable tool to an even larger development community." The project to implement Sun Microsystems J2ME(tm) technology
on BlueMod was surprisingly fast, says Valk. "This is the platform that
seems to provide the most flexibility to developers right now," said Valk. "We think it's a great platform," says Professor Neil Bergmann, Lecturer in Embedded Systems, School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, University of Queensland. "This academic year we'll have 20 project students working on innovative networked embedded systems, and in the near future I hope to have all 200 of our EE graduates exposed to this sort of technology. We want our project students to be thinking about the appliances and devices of the future, and building working prototypes of complete systems. BlueMod gives us the infrastructure we need to build new networked appliances quickly without spending months on networked controller designs." The UQ win is the first of what HCV CEO Henry Valk hopes will be a successful foray into academia for the company. "By offering educational institutions preferred pricing and support, we hope to create a powerful BlueMod development community in years to come."
