connectBlue and Code Blue Communications bring Bluetooth to the Medical Devices Industry

connectBlue has signed an agreement with US based company Code Blue Communications Inc. to allow the company exclusive distribution rights for connectBlue’s Bluetooth products to the North American medical industry.

connectBlue, already recognised as a pioneer in introducing Bluetooth to industrial environments worldwide, made a decision to expand into the medical devices market after recognising the advantages Bluetooth brings to this critical industry.

Code Blue Communications Inc., founded last year, designs and develops Bluetooth interface devices and integrated solutions for vertical markets, specialising in the medical industry. Bill Saltzstein, the company’s founder and President has significant experience in the medical devices manufacturing industry and is well placed to integrate connectBlue’s products into the medical environment.

Rolf Nilsson, President of connectBlue said, "the medical and industrial markets have very different functions but share a common need to reliably remove and replace the cables, which are a substantial contribution to the cost of equipment and are often a hindrance in critical situations such as the medical environment.

"We believe that our OEM Bluetooth product solution will prove to be very attractive to medical device manufacturers. Not only is it a cost-effective solution, requiring no up-front development costs, it is also extremely flexible, allowing manufacturers to extend the overall functionality of their products without the need to modify existing installed devices or negotiate the extensive Bluetooth qualification process.

"There is a very large market for wireless connectivity throughout the medical devices industry, with the US representing approximately 50 per cent of potential demand. This is an untapped market in terms of Bluetooth implementation, largely due to the lack of specialised knowledge among the Bluetooth community about the requirements of the medical device market. This is certainly our rationale in teaming up with Code Blue Communications, which has the specialised industry knowledge to guide us through the issues unique to the medical industry," he said.

Prior to founding Code Blue Communications, Mr Saltzstein was the Director of Advanced Development at Medtronic Physio -Control. However, his career in the medical and engineering fields is varied and extensive and has included management of cardiograph and defibrillator projects in the former Hewlett Packard cardiology division, as well as development of the LifeSigns home health product for Instromedix.

"I estimate that the number of existing medical devices with potential for Bluetooth wireless connectivity to be in excess of 700,000 in the United States alone," Mr Saltzstein said. "The wireless connectivity enabled by the connectBlue solution will allow us to address difficult issues in today’s medical environment such as the need to accurately collect the data from devices that is today transcribed manually, as well as the requirement to connect mobile devices to networks and peripherals.

"I believe we can expect to see Bluetooth widely deployed in products from portable monitors to infusion pumps. Bluetooth also has a huge potential to tap into the growing area of telemedicine and home based care. As the technology becomes pervasive, it will easily enable solutions we have only been able to dream about in the medical device field," he concluded.
